- His real name - Marion Robert Morrison, changed to Marion Michael Morrison after his parents named his brother Robert.
- He did the voice over prologue introducing James Arness (whom he recommended for the role) as Matt Dillon on the first episode of Gunsmoke.
- He was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 1979 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1980.
- He was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar twice, Sands of Iwo Jima and True Grit. He won for True Grit, later joking backstage that he should have worn an eyepatch earlier in his career. He was also nominated for a producing Oscar for The Alamo.
- His footprints at Grauman's Chinese Theater are laid in cement that contained sand from Iwo Jima.
