THE BANANA DAIQUIRI MARTINI The "perfect Caribbean Cocktail" Ingredients: Light Rum, Triple Sec, Lime Juice, Sugar, Bananas, Maraschino Cherry The Daiquiri cocktail is said to have originated in the Venus bar in Santiago near an iron mine and a beach both bearing the name Daiquiri - according to the story it was invented by some American miners who ran out of gin. Making use of the local rum, limes and sugars of the region the miners got creative and the Daiquiri was born. Admiral Lucius W. Johnson of the U.S. Navy discovered it in his travels and introduced the Daiquiri to the Army and Navy Club in Washington DC and soon it became a favorite of the likes of Ernest Hemingway and President John F. Kennedy. When wartime rationing made whiskey, gin and vodka hard to come by in the 1940s rum came into it's own thanks to Roosevelt's Good Neighbor Policy which opened up trade to Cuba and the Caribbean and the Daiquiri began to appear in American bars throughout the country. The most famous classic recipe comes from the El Floridita bar in Havana, Cuba. As for the Banana Daiquiri? Well, in Mountain Top in St. Thomas on the Virgin Islands there is a sign that simply states: "One upon a time back in 1953, a famous British sea captain by the name of Capt. George Soule sailed from his native island of Barbados on a quest to find the ultimate Caribbean Cocktail. He searched Guadaloupe for Guava Gimlets, Saba for Soursop Sodas & Martinique for Mango Margaritas. His search was completed on the island of St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands at a place called Mountain Top. He had finally made the ultimate discovery - the perfect island beverage! Mixing local island rum, sugar cane extract and ripe bananas from a nearby grove, he added fresh lime juice & a homemade secret banana liqueur. . . . Capt. Soule had created the now World Famous Banana Daiquiri enjoyed by over 10 million visitors to the World Famous Mountain Top" But no matter it's provenance, If you like bananas this Banana Daiquiri Martini should just tickle your monkey toes!
