THE COSMOPOLITAN Probably the very first designer martini ever created! Ingredients: Vodka, Triple Sec, Cranberry Juice, Lime Juice, Cranberries, Sugar The Cosmo is a classic sour cocktail - a combination of a spirit, some form of sweetener, and the addition of sour, the cranberry juice adds another dimension of tartness and flavor. The classic recipe calls for a dash of orange bitters but the popular version most people enjoy does not. Feel free to add that little dash if you like - I do myself. Please, please, please, use FRESH lime juice - it is essential to this martini. Read my HISTORY OF THE COSMOPOLITAN MARTINI for some interesting facts on this original designer martini. HISTORY OF THE COSMOPOLITAN Many people have been credited with the creation of The Cosmopolitan. Though we may never know it's true origins some of those credited with the birth of the Cosmo are: Neal Murray (who supposedly introduced it at The Cork & Cleaver Steakhouse in Minneapolis in 1975) John Caine (who is credited with bringing the drink to the Fern Bars of San Francisco in the 1980s) Cheryl Cook, who's version was loosely based on a Cape Coddler or Cape Cod cocktail. To quote Cook, "What overwhelmed me was the number of people who ordered Martinis just to be seen with a Martini glass in their hand. It was on this realization that gave me the idea to create a drink that everyone could palate and was visually stunning in that classic glass. This is what the Cosmo was based on." Cooks recipe was "Absolut Citron, a splash of Triple Sec, a drop of Roses lime and just enough cranberry to make it oh so pretty in pink." It's said that Toby Cecchini brought in the Cointreau and lime juice sometime in the late 1980s, finalizing the version of the Cosmopolitan we know today. Some earlier non-IBA versions use Rose's lime instead of fresh lime and Triple Sec instead of the Cointreau, which is the more costly liqueur. Other Versions: Blue Cosmopolitan: white cranberry juice instead of standard red juice, and blue curaçao in place of the triple sec. Cosmocello: substitutes limoncello for the lime juice. |
