THE GIMLET MARTINI Barkeep, hold the vermouth and splash in a bit of lime! Ingredients: Gin or Vodka, Rose's Lime Juice, Slice of Lime The Gimlet is a martini with Rose's Lime Juice instead of vermouth. It's that simple. While you might find a few recipes out there that include some simple syrup (and frankly I like it with the sweetener) - that is not a true Gimlet. The Vodka Gimlet simply replaces the gin with vodka. The proportions above in the recipe card are the classic but, as always, you can mix to your tastes. I myself prefer fresh lime juice to Rose's - and a key lime is even better but according to the character Terry Lennox in Raymond Chandler's The Long Goodbye: "a real gimlet is half gin and half Rose's lime juice and nothing else" There's an interesting story on who created the Gimlet. The Joy of Mixology by Gary Regan gives credit to a Naval surgeon by the name of Gimlette who supposedly created the cocktail as a means of delivering lime to sailors as a prevention for scurvy. Evidently the gin preserved the lime which cured the scurvy - a disease which plagued those on long sea voyages prior to today's mod-cons of refrigeration and food preservation. Here's another interesting little seafaring tidbit - rum was added to the drinking water aboard ships back in those days as well to control and mask the taste of the bacteria which accumulated in the water barrels on long voyages.
