THE GIN FIZZ MARTINI Barkeep, hold the vermouth and splash in a bit of lime! Ingredients: Gin, Lemon Juice, Simple Syrup, Soda, Lemon The first printed reference to a fizz is in the Jerry Thomas' 1887 edition of The Bartender's Guide. Obviously the fizz was the addition of a carbonated beverage to a sour cocktail and in those days that fizz was soda. Many confuse a Gin Fizz with a Tom Collins and, though the two drinks are almost identical, a classic Tom Collins calls for "Old Tom Gin" which is a sweetened gin similar to Genever Gin. Since "Old Tom Gin"is so hard to find I suppose there really is no difference other than the size of the cocktail and the glass it's served it. A Tom Collins is traditionally 10 ounces where a Gin Fizz is served in an 8 ounce glass. Of course, none of that matters here because I'm really screwing with the recipe and using just a splash of soda because a standard martini glass simply can't hold a full Gin Fizz! ![]() You can mess with it even more and create these "Fizzes": Silver Fizz — add an egg white Golden Fizz — add an egg yolk Royal Fizz — add a whole egg Diamond Fizz — sparkling wine instead of carbonated water Green Fizz — add a splash of green crème de menthe Slow Gin Fizz – replace the gin with sloe gin My very favorite Fizz is the Ramos Fizz also known as The New Orleans Fizz.
