Once, in the dark recesses of time, primeval man roamed the earth with four arms, four legs and one head with two faces. These ancient humans were androgynous, powerful, full of hubris and they made the fatal error of attacking the gods.
This caused great consternation on Mount Olympus. This insolence could not be ignored but if the gods annihilated humans who would be there to worship them and bring them sacrifice?
Zeus, greatest of all, king of the ancient gods came up with a plan to "humble their pride and improve their manners - men shall continue to exist, but I will cut them in two and then they will be diminished in strength and increased in numbers"* Zeus then split all mankind into two - one half male, the other female.
Mankind now spends eternity seeking his other half - his twin flame, his soul mate. According to the legends when all karmic debt is purged these two parts will fuse back together to return to the ultimate human.
In the meantime, you might as well have a martini.
